Ikue Nakagawa

Tamanegi

Ikue Nakagawa is a performer and choreographer. For each of her pieces, the initial impulse of drawing gives rise to intimate cartographies, the scenographic object, and then movement. The Japanese word tamagenimeans onion, an object she seemed to want to draw when surrounded by her family as she was mourning the death of her father. The onion represents the structure of family relationships: a common root, many layers protecting the young heart and the thinning of the skin as one grows older. From this metaphor a choreographic and sculptural solo was born, surrounded by life-size effigies when it hatches. In the tradition of her previous piece Nakami, this creation is imagined as a strange... and familiar constellation.
